Radically Open DBT

What is it?

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) is an evidence- based treatment targeting a spectrum of disorders characterized by excessive self-control, often referred to as Overcontrol (OC). Excessive self-control is associated with social isolation, poor interpersonal functioning, and severe and difficult-to-treat mental health problems, such as anorexia nervosa, chronic depression, excessive perfectionism, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Who can benefit?

RO DBT is an appropriate treatment for clients with rigid or perfectionistic thinking patterns that interfere with their overall happiness or quality of life.  Those who have been successful in many areas of their life but, despite their best efforts, find themselves on the outside looking in or feeling disconnected from important relationships, may benefit from RO DBT.

What can I expect?

RO DBT significantly differs from other treatment approaches.  Rather than treating the specific symptoms of depression or anxiety directly, it targets maladaptive social signals that impact relationships and lead to feelings of loneliness.  The RO DBT therapist serves as coaches or ambassador who help clients use their superior inhibitory control to target the things that are keeping them stuck.  RO DBT includes both individual treatment sessions and skills training classes that are delivered over 30 weeks.
